Art Speaks, Posters Yell!
Rock Out with AIGA Cleveland.
Rock poster legend Art Chantry’s works are gritty, inventive and sometimes startling. For Chantry, poster design is folk art and his approach: low-tech. Chantry is known for subculture posters and album covers he designed for Nirvana, Hole and The Sonics which rivals the world’s best graphic design. But he is equally admired for his compelling logo design, and his creative talent has been pursued by corporations such as Nike, Microsoft and Coca-Cola. You’ll want to hear what this iconic graphic designer has to?say about delivering a loud, memorable, visual message.
Art Chantry’s work has been collected and exhibited by The Louvre, The Smithsonian, The Library of Congress, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). The Tacoma, Washington-based designer has won hundreds of design and advertising awards. In 1993 The Seattle Art Museum honored him with a one-man retrospective of his work. In summer 2003, PS1, in association with MOMA, did the same. His works are compiled in Some People Can’t Surf (Chronicle, 2001).
Bring your Recycleable Design Items: ZeroLandfill is an award-winning reuse program that supports the supply needs of local artists and arts educators while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity. AIGA Cleveland has teamed up with ZeroLandfill to make it easy for the design community to donate and recycle these items. Remember to bring all your old Pantone books, paper samples and extra art supplies to the event to be collected at the entrance. For more info www.zerolandfill.net

Art Chantry is an eclectic, funky, funny speaker with a rich background in design for print. Internationally recognized, yet infinitely approachable, Art is welcome blend of experience and fun! AIGA Cleveland audience members last night saw a bit of his prolific work, some of which has been exhibited around the world: MoMA, Louvre and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- to name a few. Some very fancy names for a guy who isn't very fancy! Years of tight budgets and deadlines gave Art the ability to design for print as only a true insider can. Experience shows when you can create a poster to be put on press, run once, switch the black plate, run a second time and have a piece museums request when you're finished (see Give Peace a Dance--swing dancers). If you think you know print (or hope to someday) brush up against this guy. Maybe some of his non-heat set web print will rub off on you!
