Comments/Notes from 2008 Green Salon

Many of the resources here were collected at the May 28 2008 Green Salon – Learn / Act event. Here are some more notes and comments from that event:

Questions:
1) What Interests me the most in sustainability?
2) What can I do to make my job/workplace more sustainable?
3) What resources/help do I need to make my workplace more sustainable?

Major themes recorded from paper on tables.

  •  Recycling  - Why doesn’t’ everybody recycle?  If people
were penalized for throwing out trash then the change would happen.
  •  Waste – Think when using disposables, is there a reusable
solution?  Shreded paper – waste for one company becomes bedding for
    the other.
  •  Energy Efficiency  -  In Oberlin after 6 pm traffic lights
start blinking.  Eliminating Left turns for delivery fleets.
  •  Green Procurement  -  Making sustainable office and cleaning
    purchases.  Request domestic sheet.
  •  Climate Change*  Transportation – Reducing miles traveled:
work from home, carpool, public transportation.
  •  Culture change – Shifting paradigms.  Set a standard for
yourself.  Work with account executives and educate them about
sustainability.  Connect with clients. Little Changes – big results
(collectively). Hiring based on knowledge of sustainability. Getting
everyone on board – establishing an engaging Green Team.
  •  Inks – Soy – current standard, vegetable based – next step.
    Safe Pantone colors.
  •  Packaging – reusable bags, less packaging, cradle to cradle
    principles when designing packaging.
