Whether you are looking for employment at an agency or striking out on your own as a freelancer, soft skills are the smart skills that help you thrive in today’s job market. Self-promotion and relationship building are just as important as having a polished portfolio. At the AIGA EMERGE SMART SKILLS event, join fellow entry-level designers at Full Spectrum: GamerHaven to participate in this interactive workshop, where you will learn some of these important smart skills from supportive and engaged industry professionals, including how to write better resumes, receive feedback on your portfolio, and practice presentation skills in front of an audience.  

AIGA EMERGE is an initiative built to engage and empower designers who are just starting out. Created through the AIGA Innovate Grant, EMERGE aims to reach diverse audiences, existing members, and prospective members to help participating chapter and community needs in key areas of employment, growth, leadership, entrepreneurship, and life skills—as well as provide inclusive strategies that enable underrepresented groups and give all emerging designers the opportunity to flourish.

Facilitators:

Jacinda Walker is the founder and creative director of designExplorr, a design education business that celebrates design by exposing underrepresented youth to design careers. For over twenty years, her work as a designer, researcher and instructor has ranged from designing corporate communications to developing educational programs and event management. Additionally, from 2016-2018 Walker served the professional association of design, AIGA, as Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. She is a strong advocate for young people and proudly mentors several design students on portfolio presentations, professional development and career planning. 

 

Sarah Bass is currently Vice President, Division Director for The Creative Group located in downtown Cleveland. The Creative Group specializes in the placement of highly skilled digital, marketing and creative talent on a freelance, contract-to-hire, or project basis. Sarah has over 10 years of experience recruiting and developing talent, as well as business development within NE Ohio. She started her career as an Online Marketing Manager at the OfficeMax headquarters. Additionally, she spent five years developing strategic digital marketing programs as a Sr. Digital Marketing Director at Brulant/Rosetta (now SapientRazorfish).
